Overview

FabLab Coventry is part of the global FabLab network that provides digital and creative education for all. Our community is based on sharing ideas, skills, and knowledge, where local citizens can gain technical digital, and craft skills in a friendly environment. Our flexible and accessible courses allow the next generation of Coventry makers to access the latest equipment, supporting the city’s engagement with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths (STEAM).

FabLab Coventry is also an ‘Open College Network West Midlands’ accredited centre, meaning not only can we aid you in learning and sharing of new skills, but also gain a UK recognised qualification from a wide selection of our courses. We award ‘Digital Badges’, where learning and achievements outside of our qualifications, can be recognised via digital credentials to aid skill development and employment prospects.

In line with the FabLab ethos, the Eco Furniture Factory helps us to further grow the Coventry maker community by providing individuals with the opportunity to meet and work on projects with new people, to learn new skills, gain qualifications, or start-up an Eco-enterprise. With the aim to support local people to grow an Eco Village by piloting and starting up new projects and businesses that take the waste and transform it into new products for personal use, sale, or community donation.

Training is provided in a huge range of areas: jewellery making, DIY, carpentry, painting and decorating, furniture upcycling, renovation and repair, digital design, 3D printing, and manufacturing.

Our training facilities operate on live community and commercial projects, providing you with quality work experience, support your personal experiences and employability.

We offer mentoring, information, and support in a personised journey aligned with your goals and aspirations.

SHORT COURSES

Our short courses will provide you with in-depth knowledge about your topic of interest, from woodworking to digital design, we have something for everyone!

Carpentry – Level 1

In this course, we help you develop woodcraft skills such as learning how to cut, assemble, decorate and finish an item. You will get the opportunity to use a selection of hand tools and machinery to create beautifully crafted and unique products in wood. This level one course is perfect for those looking to acquire hands-on, practical experience.

You will learn to:

• Identify different tools and what their perfect use is

• Understand the need for health and safety in a workshop

• Use the tools to cut material into correct lengths

• Incorporate digital technology to add computer-controlled designs to your item

• Successfully assemble your items and fix them securely

Duration: 4 days, 10:00-14:00

Certification: This course forms one unit, governed by Open College Network West Midlands. On completion, you will be awarded a Level 1 credit award in Carpentry

Painting and Decorating – Level 1

Learn practical skills to use around the home in our Painting and Decorating course. We can help you to develop your practical skills, learning how to correctly prepare a wall for paint or wallpaper, prepare a skirting board for gloss and how to “cut in” to get paint into those hard to reach places. This beginner’s course explores the basics of home DIY and the best tools to complete your job.

You will learn to:

• Identify different tools and what their perfect use is

• Understand the need for health and safety in a workshop and the precautions for minimising the risk to yourself or others

• Prepare a wall correctly for wall-paper or painting

• Choose which type of paint is best suited to the job you are completing

• Get smooth coverage on a wall with paint or wallpaper with hints and top tips

Duration: 4 days, 10:00-14:00

Furniture Renovation – Level 1

Our renovation course introduces you to fantastic ways to transform unwanted items into something to cherish. This course allows learners to bring in an item of furniture to renovate; focusing on the basic repair of broken or loose parts, the basics of upcycling and re-styling techniques. This includes how to prep, sand, paint and finish your item.

You will learn to:

• Identify a good upcycling opportunity

• Redesign your piece of furniture

• Clean furniture for repairs and prepare areas for painting or polishing

• Use tools and equipment confidently

• Identify and reduce health and safety risks

• Complete the process of upcycling a piece of furniture from start to finish

Duration: 5 days, 10:00-14:00

Certification: This course forms one unit, governed by Open College Network West Midlands. On completion, you will be awarded a Level 1 credit award in Furniture Renovation

Entry requirements: no prior knowledge or experience needed

DIY – Level 1

Learn handy hints and tips for completing basic DIY tasks around the home. In this course you will develop DIY skills to make, level and successfully put up a shelf, and tile and grout a wall.

All of these skills will help you to maintain your home and we can also offer advice on other household issues.

You will learn to:

• Identify different tools and what their perfect use is

• Understand the need for health and safety in a workshop and the precautions to take to minimise risk to yourself or others

• Use the tools to measure and cut shelving and brackets to the correct lengths

• Level a shelf for fixing

• Cut and apply tiles to a walled area, including spacing and grouting techniques

Duration: 4 days, 10:00-14:00

Digital Fabrication – Level 1

Our digital fabrication course will enable you to develop your making skills using digital software and machinery. If you have an interest in technology, engineering, designing, crafting or creating, this is the course for you.

You will learn to:

• Use a computer design software programme to create a two dimensional (2D) designs, including how to appropriately use an image from the internet in your design

• Transform your designs into suitable formats for vinyl cutting

• Use the vinyl cutter to cut out your design and finishing it to a high standard

Duration: 4 days, 10:00-14:00.

Certification: This course forms an award, governed by Open College Network West Midlands. On completion, you will be awarded a Level 1 award in Digital Fabrication

Entry requirements: Basic IT skills, no prior knowledge or experience needed

Digital Fabrication – Level 2

The next stage from Digital Fabrication Level One, this course takes your digital design skills to the next level. Through computer-aided design (CAD) you will step into the world of three dimensional (3D) design, taking two dimensional designs into vector graphics.

You will learn to:

• Use a computer software programme to create a variety of computer-aided designs in two dimensions that once fabricated and assembled replicate a 3D model

• Join and fix your model together to create your custom made 3D object

• Use the laser cutter safely and correctly fabricate your designs in different materials, such as plywood and acrylic

Duration: 5 days, 10:00-14:00.

Certification: This course forms an award, governed by Open College Network West Midlands. On completion, you will be awarded a Level 2 award in Digital Fabrication

Entry requirements: Level 1 Digital Fabrication

Business Enterprise – Level 2

This course is designed for those considering starting their own business, and encourages learners to structure their potential business ideas, explore potential barriers and constraints to starting their own business. You will create a plan to guide you towards self-employment either independently or within a small group.

You will learn to:

• Identify a viable business idea

• Understand the requirements of starting up and running your own business

• Access support networks available to those who are starting up and managing their own business

• Identify gaps in your own knowledge, skills or abilities and effectively plan to overcome these

• Prepare a simple business plan

Duration: 5 days, 10:00-14:00.

Certification: This course forms an award, governed by Open College Network West Midlands. On completion, you will be awarded a Level 2 award in Business Enterprise

Citizen Social Science – Level 2

FabLab Coventry, in conjunction with Coventry University, is offering a nationally recognised qualification in Citizen Social Science and learn to conduct research in the community. This course is perfect for anyone looking to improve their academic and professional skills, allowing you to run your tailored research project.

You will learn to:

• Design a feasible research project that will benefit you and your local community

• Conduct research responsibly and collect data

• Utilise one-to-one support and supervision in conducting a piece of research on something that matters to you

• Build your networks with a range of people from your area

Duration: 4 days, 5 one-to-one sessions, conducted over 2 months.

Certification: This course forms an award, governed by Open College Network West Midlands. On completion, you will be awarded a Level 2 award in in Employability and Development Skills

Entry requirements: Basic IT skills, no prior knowledge or experience needed

Preparing for the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS)

Working with our qualified technical skills instructor, you will develop the skills and knowledge needed to undertake the official Construction Skills

Certification Scheme assessment.

You will learn to:

• Understand the structure of the official CSCS test

• Recognise the requirements of the

 CSCS test questions and how to answer them

• Recognise site safety signs and their meaning

• Manage accidents and reporting

• Identify the different types of CSCS cards

• Identify different fire extinguishers and how to use them

Duration: 4 days, 10:00-14:00

Certification: Non-applicable, you will need to register for your official CSCS test separately

Entry requirements: Basic English and IT skills needed

WORKSHOPS

Our workshops will earn you ‘Digital Badges’, achievement markers that can be used on your CV, and job searching platforms such as LinkedIn and Indeed and can be used as evidence of key skills and attributes for future employers.

Getting Started with DIY

With our experienced instructors, learn some of the key elements of ‘do-ing it yourself’ for basic home improvements.

With handy hints and tips, you’ll feel confident to attempt simple changes around your home.

You will learn to:

• Identify hand tools, select the appropriate tool for the job, and use it correctly and safely

• Attach a shelf and bracket securely to a wall

• Paint a room to a good standard

• Restore simple furniture items

Duration: 1 day, 10:00-14:00

3D Modelling

(Basic)

Create a three-dimensional (3D) model using computer design software.

You will learn to:

• Use computer software to create your own 3D computer-aided designs

• Navigate around the workspace to see your object from different viewpoints

• Create and combine shapes to create a solid 3D model

Duration: 3 hours

Entry requirements: no prior knowledge or experience needed

3D Modelling

(Intermediary)

Progress your 3D design skills and create slightly more advanced designs to create a product.

You will learn to:

• Use an online 3D modelling package (Fusion360) to develop your computer-aided designs

• Navigate around the workspace to see your object from different viewpoints

• Create shapes and combine shapes to create a solid 3D model from 2D line drawings

Duration: 3 hours

Entry requirements: Basic IT skills, some experience of computer-aided design

Upcycling Textiles

With our instructors, learn to repurpose everyday textiles and transform them into new items, ranging from clothing to tote bags.

Whether it’s something you already own or can alter from our resources, use traditional techniques to modernise your items.

You will learn to:

• Identify appropriate materials for repurposing

• Use the best techniques for handling different textiles

• Give life to old items

INDUCTIONS

 ‘Learn2’ Sessions

Anyone looking to use our machines to work on personal projects or build their practical skills would benefit from completing the Learn2 induction sessions.

Before usage, all FabLab members must complete machine inductions.

Learn2 Digital:

In these sessions, you will be taught how to import files to the machines and how to correctly set them for your chosen material and product.
